SUMMERTIME HIKING……

Jack and I continue our quest to hike all 23 parks in Medina County.  Plus – much to Jack’s dismay, I bought a book called 60 Hikes within 60 Miles of Cleveland!  Onward!  Yesterday’s hike took us to beautiful Allardale.  Stan and Ester Allard donated 336 acres of their farm to the Medina County Park District in 1992.  The farm had been in their family for 3 generations, since 1877. Their donation guaranteed that at least some of the rolling landscape would remain undeveloped.  Allardale has been recognized several times as an outstanding example of forestry and land conservation.  In the 1930’s this farm was among the first to practice soil-saving techniques such as contour strip farming and erosion control using pines and spruces planted along steep hillsides.  Since then, at least 100,000 trees have been planted!!!!!  There are established collections of black walnut, red and white oak, white pine and a variety of others.  Ohio wild flowers were still blooming brightly in August, the sky was blue, the birds were singing, butterflies danced happily and we had a great hike!!

LILIES OF THE FIELD…………….

Jack and I bought and moved into our Ohio home in the month of December.  We all know there were no lilies blooming then!  The first spring I didn’t know to protect the lilies from the deer so we had no blooms.  This spring, a frequent spray of a product that smells like rotten eggs kept the deer away and now we are reaping the benefits of my daily, early morning sprays.  I counted!!  There are 19 different varieties!  There is a fresh vase of cut lilies on my kitchen island every day!

CALIFORNIA DREAMIN’

A last minute decision took us on a long weekend to California for a gathering of friends and family.  Pass-riding went smoothly, carmaggeddon fizzled and we had a blast!  A huge thank you to Kristen, Jack’s beautiful sister for master-minding this event and hosting us in her condo in Port Hueneme.  Cocktails at the Channel Islands Yacht Club started off our first evening and we were joined by other family members from Ventura….then dinner, dancing….  Saturday was a huge beach barbecue at Sycamore Beach – warm, white sand and aqua water made us almost think we were in Florida!  But the cool ocean breeze convinced us it was California!  We saw family that we hadn’t seen in so long and even met new family members!  We played baseball on the beach with our grandson and toasted each other with cold Pacificas and a little rum here and there!  Thanks to everyone who came – and we are looking forward to next May when we are planning a Connelly family reunion in Cabo San Lucas!
